Tag values automatically with basic rules

Map a standard field value to a custom field tag once, and Stateable applies it across every statement.

Written by Rich Schaeffer

Basic rules are value-to-tag mappings. You say "when Broker ID is 001234, set Account Type to Small Group" once β€” and Stateable applies that tag to every matching row, past and future.

Basic rules shine when you have a finite set of values to categorize. For conditional logic across multiple fields, see Build conditional tags with advanced rules.

Create a basic rule

  1. On the Data tab, open the Basic Rules panel from the left sidebar (the scales icon).

  2. Pick a source field (a standard field, e.g. Broker ID). The panel lists every distinct value in your data.

  3. Pick the target custom field (e.g. Account Type). If you don't have one yet, create it first in the Custom Fields panel.

  4. For each value, type the tag you want to assign in the Tag column. The rule saves as you type.

Priority

Several rule groups can target the same custom field. When they disagree, higher-priority groups win. The priority is shown next to each rule group. Set a new priority by editing the rule group settings; the lowest number takes effect.

Where did this tag come from?

Click any tagged cell in the grid to open the Cell Provenance popover. It shows the rule that set the value, the source field and value, and the rule's priority β€” useful for auditing or debugging unexpected tags.

Sync and untagged values

  • Sync with Filters in the Basic Rules panel toggles whether you see all values or only values in the currently filtered view. Use it to scope rule maintenance to a specific segment.

  • The Untagged tab in the panel lists every value that doesn't yet have a rule applied. Walk this tab periodically to catch new values added by recent uploads.

Tips

  • Basic rules only apply to string-type standard fields. For numeric or date conditions, use advanced rules.

  • Rule changes re-tag existing data asynchronously. Large catch-ups can take a few minutes.
