Get a Google Gemini API key for Stateable

Create a Google AI (Gemini) API key and connect it to Stateable to power the AI assistant. Step by step, no technical background needed.

Written by Stateable

To use Google's Gemini models, you bring your own Google AI API key. A key is a private password that lets Stateable talk to Google on your behalf. You get it from Google AI Studio, and it takes about five minutes.

Before you start

  • You need a Google account.

  • For business use, set up a paid (billed) key. This matters for privacy: on a paid key, Google does not use your prompts to train its models, while the free tier is treated differently. See Google's data governance policy.

Create your key

  1. Go to aistudio.google.com/apikey and sign in with your Google account.

  2. Choose Create API key.

  3. Link it to a Google Cloud project. To enable billing (recommended for business use), pick or create a project that has billing turned on.

  4. Copy the key and store it somewhere safe — treat it like a password.

Add it to Stateable

During signup this is the Connect AI step. Later, it's Settings → Assistant.

  1. Choose Google as the provider.

  2. Paste your key into the API key field.

  3. Pick a model from the list.

  4. Choose Test connection to confirm the key works, then Connect AI to save it.

Your key is encrypted before it's stored and is never shown again or sent back to your browser.

Keep your key safe

  • Treat the key like a password — don't paste it into emails or chats.

  • If it's ever exposed, delete it in Google AI Studio and create a new one; the old one stops working immediately.

  • Use a billed key for business data so your prompts aren't used for model training.

Troubleshooting

  • "Test connection" fails with an authentication error. The key was copied incompletely or was deleted. Create a fresh key and paste the whole thing.

  • The key works but you're concerned about data use. Confirm the key is on a project with billing enabled, then review Google's data governance policy linked above.

  • You don't see the Connect AI step or Settings → Assistant. The assistant may not be enabled for your organization, or you may not have permission. Ask an admin.
