To use the Stateable assistant with Claude, you bring your own Anthropic API key. A key is a private password that lets Stateable talk to Anthropic on your behalf — you pay Anthropic directly for what you use, and Stateable never charges a markup. This takes about five minutes.
Before you start
You need an Anthropic account. If you don't have one, you'll create it in the first step.
You need billing set up at Anthropic — usage is pay-as-you-go. A key created without a payment method or credits can't actually answer questions, so this is the step people most often miss.
Create your key
Go to console.anthropic.com and sign in, or create an account.
Add a payment method or buy credits from the Billing section. Most teams spend only a few dollars a month at typical usage.
Open Settings → API Keys and choose Create Key.
Give it a name you'll recognize later, like Stateable, and create it.
Copy the key. It starts with sk-ant-. Anthropic only shows it once — if you lose it, you delete it and make a new one.
Add it to Stateable
During signup this is the Connect AI step. Later, it's Settings → Assistant.
Choose Anthropic as the provider.
Paste your sk-ant- key into the API key field.
Pick a model. We recommend Fable 5 for the best results, or Opus 4.8 for a lower cost per use.
Choose Test connection to confirm the key works, then Connect AI to save it.
Your key is encrypted before it's stored and is never shown again or sent back to your browser.
Keep your key safe
Treat the key like a password — don't paste it into emails or chats.
If it's ever exposed, delete it in the Anthropic console and create a new one; the old one stops working immediately.
You can set a monthly spend limit in the Anthropic Billing settings if you want a hard ceiling.
Troubleshooting
"Test connection" fails with an authentication error. The key was copied incompletely, or it was deleted in the console. Create a fresh key and paste the whole thing.
The key saves but answers fail later. Usually billing — add a payment method or credits in the Anthropic console.
You don't see the Connect AI step or Settings → Assistant. The assistant may not be enabled for your organization, or you may not have permission. Ask an admin.
