Get an OpenAI API key for the Stateable assistant

Create an OpenAI API key and connect it to Stateable to power the AI assistant. Step by step, no technical background needed.

Written by Stateable

If you'd rather use OpenAI's models, you bring your own OpenAI API key. A key is a private password that lets Stateable talk to OpenAI on your behalf — you pay OpenAI directly for usage, and Stateable adds no markup. This takes about five minutes.

Before you start

  • You need an OpenAI platform account (the developer platform, not a ChatGPT subscription — they're separate).

  • You need billing set up on that platform account. Usage is pay-as-you-go, and a key without credits can't answer questions.

Create your key

  1. Go to platform.openai.com/api-keys and sign in, or create an account.

  2. Add a payment method or credits under Settings → Billing.

  3. On the API keys page, choose Create new secret key.

  4. Name it something you'll recognize, like Stateable, and create it.

  5. Copy the key. It starts with sk-. OpenAI only shows it once — if you lose it, delete it and make a new one.

Add it to Stateable

During signup this is the Connect AI step. Later, it's Settings → Assistant.

  1. Choose OpenAI as the provider.

  2. Paste your sk- key into the API key field.

  3. Pick a model from the list.

  4. Choose Test connection to confirm the key works, then Connect AI to save it.

Your key is encrypted before it's stored and is never shown again or sent back to your browser.

Keep your key safe

  • Treat the key like a password — don't paste it into emails or chats.

  • If it's ever exposed, delete it on the OpenAI platform and create a new one; the old one stops working immediately.

  • You can set usage limits in the OpenAI Billing settings if you want a hard ceiling.

Troubleshooting

  • "Test connection" fails with an authentication error. The key was copied incompletely or was deleted. Create a fresh key and paste the whole thing.

  • The key saves but answers fail later. Usually billing — add a payment method or credits on the OpenAI platform.

  • You don't see the Connect AI step or Settings → Assistant. The assistant may not be enabled for your organization, or you may not have permission. Ask an admin.
